DescriptionThe header file contains information by and about Herbert and the use of masks and was collated by her daughter Sandra Lousada, removing papers from their original place within the archive; it is therefore difficult to date individual items or to know their context but in some cases it is possible to identify these details. The file includes both general information on the use of masks in theatre [especially articles on Greece] and items by Herbert on her theories about masks and the move from naturalistic staging and referrals to specific productions such as The Mask of Orpheus and Oresteia.

Folder 2 contains a typed talk given to students of theatre design which includes Herbert's summary of her feelings about theatre and her thoughts about the attitude of fine artists towards applied artists, and also lists notes for referring to her productions of The Chairs, Endgame, Richard 111 and other plays. There is also Herbert's typed speech on becoming an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy; a typed detailed response to a student project Herbert had set using the OlivierTheatre, the notes include an outline of what she asked the students to do and detailed comments on the degree to which they carried out her proposals, for example an attitude to ground plans. There is also Herbert's typed 'General Impressions of Work Submitted by Décor Students of the Central School of Art and Design 1978'; correspondence relating to Central School of Art and Design; Herbert's lecture script on her beliefs about theatre and her career, given at St Paul's Girls School, 1970; Herbert's lecture script for her talk given in India, 1989; text from Victoria Radin for Sunday Plus, article on The Oresteia; Herbert's typed notes on Bertholt Brecht; Herbert's speech at the 1976 George Devine Award.
