DescriptionThe file contains a photocopy of a letter from Laurence Olivier to Christine Smith (secretary of the George Devine Award) with reference to how his name should be styled; photocopy of an essay about Hans Holbein; photocopied newsclippings relating to The Tobin Endowment at the McNay Art Museum (which included Herbert's costumes for the Met Opera production of Lulu) and diverse press clippings relating to Herbert's productions and to her theatre and opera colleagues and her painter friends, includuing an article 'What Can the Royal Court Fight Now? By Sally Beauman c 1969; an obituary of Merula Guinness; striking visual images from newspapers and magazines. There are also a number of clippings marked George Devine from a press agency. There is also a section of Gavin Bryars clippings and a magazine for Leicester Haymarket Theatre.
Also includes an envelope of newspaper clippings titled 'Reviews, etc.' which includes John Osborne writing on George Devine, Osborne's review of the book 'The National' by Peter Lewis; Baghdad Lullaby by Tony Harrison; article by A.P. Herbert about House of Lords and stage censorship; review of The Mask of Orpheus; article in French about 25th anniversary of the English Stage Company; article by John Naughton on James Joyce, referring to Samuel Beckett; New York Times article on lecture by George Devine; postcard from Pierre Chabert in Paris referring to his production of Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape; also includes further handwritten card from Pierre Chabert.
Additional items include: National Geographic article possibly used as research material for Tony Harrison's 'Fram'; a 'New Yorker' article 'Another Orpheus Sings' by Andrew Porter, about Harrison Birtwistle and A Mask of Orpheus; assorted research material torn from magazine and newspapers relating to Julius Caesar .
Also inlcludes clippings from 26 October 1980 Magazine which has photographs by Jane Brown.
