DescriptionBy William Shakespeare, Director Tony Richardson. Premiere The Royal Court Theatre, 24 Jan 1962. The file contains costume designs. The drawings are in a rich jewel colour palette using reds, oranges and mustards. Most of the drawings are annotated by character name and the garments have a Grecian quality. There is also a design for 'Dream' to be represented by a 'flowing' 'carpet' which Herbert has designed a s a collage on blue and purple hues [3897], the design includes measurements and notes on how the piece should be produced. There is also a design for fabric [?] possibly for costumes or wall hangings, 3898. In a number of the drawings characters are holding props for example, 3901 a spear. The play calls for some fantastical outfits and 3910 shows one of these, a man dressed as a lion. Some of the drawings are abstract in approach to reflect the character portrayed in a different colour palette [greens] for example, 3913 Tatiana [fairy queen].
