The costume drawings are mostly annotated by character name and are in an autumnal palette, with white highlights for example, lace cuffs 3021 except for some of the evening wear where a richer, jewel palette has been employed probably to reflect the social standing and quality of the function/garments for example, ball gown 3022 is in reds, pinks and Lady Bellaston [Tom's lover and a leading figure in London society] holds a purple facial mask. The clothes are in period with the novel on which the film was based [by Henry Fielding, published 1749]. The colours used for clothing of the lower classes are subdued autumnals for example, landlord 3023. Some of the drawings show more than one design to a page, either to show a characters wardrobe range or as alternative designs for example, 3065 shows a number of suits. The drawings are painted and in felt tip, 3048 is in biro. The locations are annotated by name and are drawn in sepia ink with a similar shade wash for example, cottage 3307 [a small number of costumes use the same pallet and style for example, 3043]. The interiors are drawn in the same way for example, 3008 but with further colours used as highlights. The drawings reflect the period of the novel and are thus classical in design. Some show the same shot but with a slightly different palette for example, 3009 and 3010 both show a hallway with stairs but the palette of the first is darker than that of the second [either showing two alternatives or showing full sun/partial sun views]. Other interiors are fully painted in an autumnal colour palette. A number have characters placed in situ in the room setting for example, 3014 who are painted in costume. A few are very different in style for example, 3017 is washed in reds giving it a dramatic effect and showing the scene to be in candlelight [a ball in this case].
