TitleJulius Caesar
LevelFile
Date1964
DescriptionBy William Shakespeare, Director Lindsay Anderson. Premiere, The Royal Court Theatre, 26 Nov 1964. The file contains costume and set designs. The colours vary depending on the status of the character and upon historical accuracies for example, senators are in historically correct robes of white and purple [0271], peasants are in an earthy colour palette [0314], citizens are in a similar colour base to peasants but often with a swath of a jewel colour [0274] and high class citizens have larger sections of these jewel colours [0303, 0350]. Caesar is painted entirely in tones of purple [0334-5]. Many of the designs are annotated by character name/status. There are a number of pen drawn portraits for example, 0277. Of note amongst the set designs is 0268 which is a plane for a set piece that shows how the look of the piece was to be achieved using a metal frame. The sets are painted in similar colours to the high class citizens: an earthy base with details in jewel tones for example, 0311. 0284-0293; 0295-0301 are drawn in a similar hurried manner and show set and costumes, they are of note because many have extra notes and they show the continuity of Herbert's designs between stage and actor. In additional details, such as standards with Roman text, can be seen. Other evidence of Herbert's research can be seen in 0302 which is a drawn from a photograph of a reconstruction of Roman buildings on Palatine Hill.
