Most of the costumes are annotated by character, many are line drawings [for example, 4931] or use a sober/dark palette of black and blues [for example, 4935]. 4940 shows a group of costumes/actors which helps illustrate how they interconnect with each other and the set., a number [such as this one] show additional staging details/props for example, 4939 the character holds a newspaper and a running theme is placards for example, 4951 holds a 'WE WANT JOBS' placard. There are a number of portraits for example, 4952 which also has a hair colour sample attached. 4961-9; 4986-90 contain designs for masks, which half cover the face. A few designs show the recto and verso of the costume for example, 4978 and 4979 which shows the recto and profile as well as having additional notes. The set designs include 'stained glass' window designs in rich purples, blues, pinks and reds [4924-5; 4991-2]. Backdrops are painted in black/dark greys for example, 4945 or as collages in dark autumnal palettes with streaks of gold's or smoky blues for example, 4993. 4994 indicates how Herbert was going to create a sense of perspective and cityscape at the back of the stage area. Many of the designs are in pencil and are annotated by scene number. 5056-7 show how boards/scenery was to be placed on stage. 5058-61 storyboard the sets in pen.
