TitleA Patriot for Me
LevelFile
Date1965
DescriptionBy John Osborne, Director Anthony Page. Premiere, The Royal Court Theatre, 30 Jun 1965. The file contains costume and set designs, both reflecting the period style in which the play is set [1890s-1900s]. The costumes are sumptuous in design and colour, using rich jewel tones which sometimes clash for example, 1032 and are mainly annotated by character name. A number of the costumes are fantastical for example, that of Lady Godiva 1039 where she wears bright pink tights, a corseted leotard and chemise with sleeves to the floor, 1043 which shows a shepherdess is pinks carrying a cocktail tray rather than naturalistic tones or 1048 which shows the character dressed as Marie Antoinette [all for the Baron's ball?]. Some have additional notes on them for example, 1061 about colours or show the verso and recto for example, 1063. 1069 has a fabric sample attached. The set backdrop was projected behind stage dressing in the theatre, the designs for which are painted and collaged: panelled rooms painted in reds/rusts and black/greys [1071]; woods [1087]; and street scenes [1084]. There is also evidence of research, 1078 shows gymnastic equipment from Hanover, 1854.
Paint, pen and chalk on paper. Collage.
