DescriptionBy Gluck [Libretto by Calzabigi], Director Glen Byam Shaw. Premiere. Sadler's Wells Theatre, 4 Oct 1967. The file contains costume and set drawings for the opera. The costumes are heavily drawn from Grecian styles [in 5461 women hold Greek pots] and are painted in so give the 'material' texture. The colour palette is heavily muted [black, white, greys, olives, browns] and mostly annotated by character name and some by scene number. A few garments have what appears to be brighter tones, oranges and yellows, but these garments were in fact created out of netting and so would not have appeared particularly bright [4613 design and notes]. A number are line drawn for example, 4562 which also has a lot of movement to it. It is possible some are research drawings for example, 4563 shows a line of women who have the appearance of decoration on a Greek pot and 5464 that shows hair styles. In some characters are holding objects for example, 4571 holds a lyre [see 4577-8 for a design of the instrument]. A few have additional details for example, 4592 has details of how many ballet boys and girls need the costume. Cupid [4598] has metallic detailing on his costume, created by collage. The sets are sketched out in several pages for example, 4579-89 and feature a central circular motif which changes colour in different scenes [this was achieved by lighting it] but apart from this the colour palette was very small using black, white and grey. 4620-9 show the designs with colour.
Paint, pen and pencil on paper. Collage.
