TitleIsadora - film
LevelFile
Date1968
DescriptionDirector Karel Reisz, screenplay by Melvyn Bragg about Isadora Duncan [dancer]. The file contains costume and set designs. The costumes for Duncan are in flowing 1910s-20s styles with many drawings drawn to show the movement of the garments for example, 1187 where the figure has her head back and arms flung out. There is a different drawing style employed for Duncan's off stage clothes where see is shown more sedately stood. The colours range widely for dark purple [1174], to florals in black and gold [1223] and to orange and white [1206]. Some are annotated by where Duncan was or the show name she was in, some have extra notes for example, 1237 notes the oyster velvet garment as a motor car outfit for a journey with Armand or 1241 'Paris restaurant' because of this some of the designs seem incongruous to the overall piece for example in 1247-9 Duncan is dressed in a music hall costume whose design is more Victorian can-can girl than 1910s-20s. 1226 has a fabric sample attached. In 1244 you see the side and in 1245 the verso of the same garment. Some drawings are of groups for example, 1268-9 shows a party group from 1922.
There are also costume designs for other characters, including on-stage fantastical costumes such as 1274-6 that are not in period, also in a 1910s-20s flowing style for example, Armand in 1388 wears a layered dress of blues and purples. Male costumes are mainly in black and browns for example, 1424.
The set designs are similar in period to the costumes, many are drawn in a free hand style for example, 1270-2. Some show real life locations for example, 1282 interior of The British Museum. Please note, there are very few set designs.
