DescriptionBy Adrian Mitchell, Director Michael Blakemore and John Dexter. The National Theatre at the New Vic, 20 Jul 1971. The file contains costume and set designs, the play was about William Blake [poet]. The costumes are varied in colour and design from regal palette and style for Mad King George the Fifty [1290; 1310-11], to 1970's dresses [1301] and army combat gear [1294]. Some are double designs that indicate how characters/costumes would interact together for example, 1302. A few show action shots with props for example, 1304 armed/riot police or show the verso and recto for example, 1316. A number are humorous for example, 1312 puts Mad King George the Fifty in armour with a fan of Union Jack's behind him. There are also designs for Blake himself for example, 1322-3 and other historic characters such as the poet John Milton, 1332 author of Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained wearing a jumper embossed with Paradise Now and 1333 has a list of different port names next to the garment suggesting it was being considered for several peoples wardrobe. A couple have extra notes, on 1327 one of these indicates a change in characterisation from intellectuals to skinheads [the design is of three skinheads, see 1353 for three intellectuals]. The set designs show 'real' places for example, 1336 Joshua Reynolds [painter] studio and imagined ones for example, 1339 British Cultural Committee's office in pen/pencil.
