TitleLa Forza del Destino [The Force of Destiny]
LevelFile
Date1975
DescriptionBy Giuseppe Verdi, Director John Dexter. Premiere, The Paris Opera House, 2 May 1957. The file contains costume and set designs inspired by Goya. The costumes and set are both in a dark palette of black, reds and browns with the only light colour being white on the monks robes, the only except is the use of gold for gilding for example, 4447; 4454 or brights used to depict a civilian, 4461. Military costumes and monks robes are the main costumes for example, 4454-5. The designs are annotated by character name and a few have additional notes for example, 4473. Some show characters holding props for example, 4468 a cross. There are a few portraits for example, 4497 which shows the hair style clearly. 4501 is of interest as it shows costume parts such as gaiters and may be research into the periods costumes. There are a number of group scenes, showing clothing and staging for example, 4435 and 4437. The set was designed to appear to have a paved floor with cut out shapes providing the detailing, notes on the set are at 4411-2; 14, for the set pieces mainly on the stage but 4439 shows some of the shapes were placed [or Herbert considered placing them] in the foreground. The opera is storyboarded at 4406; 4415; 4417-25. The set uses dark colours with segments lit up by lighting [shown in the drawings by pale blue shadow and unpainted areas of paper] for example, 4426 and 4431, in some drawings the lights make the 'sky' glow for example, 4505. Many of the drawings have characters placed onto the set and so the staging is discernable for example, 4428. 4438 shows two scenes in four drawings, each scene is shown as a rough and more completed design. 5455 is a scanned document with polaroids of drawings.
