The costumes are not designed to a particular colour palette or theme and range from rainbow bright fabric [3928] to dark blue and teal [3927], some are annotated by character name and a few have additional notes for example, 3987. The clothes also vary in style from 1910s-1920s day/evening wear to more fantastical/circus wear for example, 3963 and 3971 respectively. In some characters are holding props for example, 3964, an artists board and brushes. 3972 is a double design [couple]. There are a few portraits such as, 3979. The set designs use a lot of fabric to frame the scene for, example 4029 and projections of Lulu's imprisonment. The framed sets use opulent jewel colours and gold [4029]. Some drawings show a number of designs juxtaposed such as, 4033 which also included designs for a spiral staircase that was used as an extra entrance to the stage. 4040-1 include five development drawings for a set and set pieces are also designed, see 4047-8. In addition to these Herbert designed posters [indeed costume and set pieces come together in some designs such as, the poster of Lulu which shows her dressed as a clown with the dimension for the set piece noted, see 3932] and there are incomplete and completed designs for example, 4049 and 4065 respectively and these are in the style of Mucha, in fact there is evidence of research into his work, see 4052. 4067-9 contains cast and design notes.
It also contains a folder of drawings on tracing paper, possibly projection drawings.

Along with the drawings are design notes, pre-production and production photographs and relating letters for example, to Herbert from the executive director of The Metropolitan Opera [Anthony Poliss], 31 Mar 1980, confirming her work on the opera.
There is also a folder of costume print outs. There are photos of the actors and behind each photo, print outs of the different costume designs in black and white. |
