DescriptionBy William Shakespeare, Director Lindsay Anderson. Premiere, Theatre Royal, Stratford East, 15 May 1981. The file contains costume and set designs. The costumes are in two distinct palettes: jewel colours and darks, see 2648 and 2653 respectively, so to reflect social standing and position/historical costume for say a court person as opposed to a solider. They are mainly annotated by character name and some hold props for example, 2671 depict a musician with instrument and handheld mask. The garments are classical to a Shakespearian production being broadly Tudor/Middle Ages. 2660 shows the ghost, who is dressed in pastels and floaty material. The mimes are also drawn differently, see 2680-1, wearing masks and painted in a more fluid style. 2709-15; 17-19 storyboard the sets and on some drawings the action also. Gauze was used and the design can be seen in 2720, with colour in 2721. Full scale landscapes were also painted onto gauze, see 2722-30, many of which are dramatic.
On a drawing for Osric, 2677, is the inscription 'To Edward with love from Jocelyn Hamlet 1981'.
Paint and felt tip on paper.
