DescriptionBy Aeschylus, Translator Tony Harrison, Director Peter Hall. Premiere, The Olivier [The National Theatre], 28 Nov 1981. The file contains costume and set designs. The costumes included masks, the play was the first time Herbert had used full-length ones with which she was assisted by Jenny West and Sue Jenkinson. The costumes are Grecian in style, with some military designs such as 0564, and use a palette of natural tones, with autumnals and gold. They are annotated by character name. 0552 has fabric swatches attached. Designs for the masks are included and annotated for example, 0555; 0667 for soldiers and other adornments such as helmets for example, 0636. There are group designs such as 0556 and some with characters holding objects for example, 0565 an urn. The occasional garment varies in its palette for example, 0581 bright orange. There are also character portraits for example, 0657. Research materials are also included, on Etruscan art [0686] and a number of photocopied drawings of garments with fabric swatches attached are probably linked to this, 0687-92. The set featured a round floor with two 'paths' coming off and a 'room' behind, the colours were gold and grey [see 0554] with burnt orange on the rear wall of the 'room', see 0604 for colouring. Some drawings show action taken place in both spaces for example, 0554 and 0585. 5436-40 features designs of horses. The room had walls with doors that could be pulled across.
