DescriptionDirector Tony Richardson, screenplay by Richardson from a novel by John Irving. The file contains costume and set drawings. The costumes use a variety of colours from black to bright yellow but the style is generally jaunty. A number depict American outfits such as football players and cheerleaders see, 2937 and 2939. There are some double/group designs such as, 2938 the verso of a couple holding hands. 2944-5 shows the same outfit but in opposing colour ways. Some designs include props for example, 2952 is a clown with toys at his feet and a dressed up dog. 2955-7 show a bear costume, the last drawing shows how the head detaches. The sets mainly have characters placed in them and so the scene set-up is evident and are annotated by location/set name. The colours are generally dark neutrals with some brighter splashes for example, 2909 and the sets have a decrepit feel for example, 2895. Some of the drawings are uncoloured, rough sketches for example, 2911. 2912-3 show the same room but the former design is more advanced. 2962-4 are drawings of dogs. There are two designs for posters with the slogan 'Life is serious but Art is fun', 2885 and 2972 which have very different designs although they do both feature a clown.
