Date1958
DescriptionBy Ann Jellicoe, Directed by George Devine and Ann Jellicoe, premiered 25 Feb 1958, The Royal Court Theatre. The file contains costume and set designs. The costumes mainly use a autumnal colour palette. Many of the designs are annotated with the character name and/or with notes about the costume for example, 0413 notes the number of garments needed. Several of the designs are for the female lead, Greta played by Wendy Craig, who has unwielding, long bright red hair and is dressed in bright colours unlike the other characters. A number of the drawings for example, 0407 are pencil drawn/pen drawn and then colour washed portraits detailing hair/wigs and make-up. Some have drawings of small details next to the full outfit for example, 0433. Some have additional designs for example, 0446 shows the character holding props [musical instruments]. The set designs show Herbert experimented with different variations of the setting [a back street]. The colour palette is dark with smoky blues used to highlight features. Several of the designs has sketched in figures to illustrate the positioning of actors on the stage for example, 0448 shows Steve sat at his instruments [in the opening scene he arranges these at the side of the stage and so the instruments are effectively part of the set]. Some have smaller detailed drawings next to the main design and 0449 has a number of small drawings of the set taken from different angels.
