TitleThe Mask of Orpheus
LevelFile
Date1986
DescriptionBy Harrison Birtwistle, Director David Freeman, premiere London Coliseum, 21 May 1986. The file contains costume and set drawings. The costumes included masks. They are in jewel colours or black/greys and an abstract twist on Grecian style. They are annotated by character name and some with extra details such as scene number. Some of the garments appear almost ghoul like, this effect is added to by the masks for example, 0778. 0778-0789 are different, the garments are Amazonian Indian in style and as such use animals prints and oranges. Some drawings appear to be costume research for example, 0803 or show the verso for example, 0805. 0791 and 0806 are labelled 'passing clouds' women and men respectively and contains drawings of heads. 0817-29; 0845-9; 0852-3; 0874-6; 0880-2; 5352; 5420-5 appear to be development ideas for masks or heads used on set and 0829 contains dimensions and a coloured drawing. 0832 contains a pattern for a wrap skirt. The set used a sun as the focal point, see 0837. Herbert experimented with placing objects over the sun for example, 0838 a flying bird and 0861-5 show stage views that include the sun. 0856 shows the stage set-up, including actors positioning. The colours used were either bright or dark and so contrasting from bright blue to black. 5415-9 show each set design/storyboard. Drawing 0874 was probably done by an assistant [male, possibly R Langsford]. Drawings 0832, 5503-07, 5653 were by Ariane Gastambide.
