Summary:
Curtis Holder began by outlining his career to date, outlining the importance of drawing in his life. He covers how he became involved with the NT through director Dominic Cooke. He discussed being part of rehearsals for Cooke's production of The Corn is Green in 2022 and what his involvement with the NT was like. He describes how this involvement changed as he worked with the departments involved in staging the production. Holder discusses becoming the first Artist in Residence at the NT and how he began working on portraits of specific backstage members of staff. He focuses on the relationships between departments and the craft that staff use for their work, which are elements often unseen or unappreciated by audiences. He describes how he and the NT worked on the exhibition, The Makers: Portraits from Backstage, and what the events around the exhibition were like. He gives advice to any future artists in residence and gives an overview of what he has learned from his time at the NT and will take forward into his future work.
