LevelFile
Date1964
DescriptionBy William Shakespeare, Director John Dexter. Premiere, The National Theatre at the Old Vic, 21 Apr 1964. the file contains costume and set designs. Othello was played by Laurence Olivier and his costumes are identified for example, 1460-3 and are in rich jewel tones with midriff sashes and gowns to the floor. Many of the other costumes are also annotated by character for example, 1464 which also shows the character holding a prop [sword]. Other male costumes use the same colours as Othello's but not in the same abundance rather, they are used on a plainer darker background. The women are brighter like Othello for example, Bianca is shown in the same colours types and quantities as Othello in 1470. The same is true of the Cypriot men for example, 1473 and clergy for example, 1508. A number of the Cypriots [poor classes] are shown in national dress for example, 1520 of white with red detailing. 1539-40 shows groups of characters. The play is storyboarded on 1534-7. The set design uses the same warm reds and oranges jewel colours as Othello's garments but as a wash.
