About the National Theatre Archive
This online catalogue should be your first point of reference for enquiries about past National Theatre productions: what plays by Howard Brenton has the National staged? Which actors have played Iago at the National? Is there a video recording of the production of Emperor and Galilean? For all such queries you can find an answer by using the 'Search the Catalogue' or 'Search by Production' links to the left of this page.
As we progress in our cataloguing of the collection, the range and number of records described online will grow and these will be made available at the NT Archive. Based on research demand the following record series have been selected for priority cataloguing and descriptions of them are provided in the NT Archive Catalogue: costume bibles; posters; press reviews; production, rehearsal and technical photographs; programmes; prompt scripts; stage management reports; video and audio recordings of performances and talks. After a production closes, material is transferred from various departments at the theatre to the Archive; material from the key series mentioned above usually becomes available within a few months of the end of a run.
The external collection, the Jocelyn Herbert Archive, is also included in this catalogue. Jocelyn Herbert was a theatre designer not just for the National Theatre but also for the Royal Court and several other theatres, crossing the genres of theatre, opera and film.
For access to all other records please ask one of the Archive staff for advice via the 'Contact Us' page. You can also call us with more general enquiries and to arrange a visit. We are open to everyone by appointment and respond to enquiries from around the world.
