The notebooks cover both Herbert's working and personal life and offer insight into how she operated as they contain a mixture of details for example, production notes and personal shopping lists. Each notebook has been individually listed, most are undated and untitled and therefore dates and titles have mainly been assigned based on prior knowledge of Herbert's work and for this reason they have not been placed in production date order for the topics are mainly subjective.
Each sketchbook has been individually listed. Where sketchbooks relate to a production this has been identified and these book have been ordered by date of the production. Some of these also include drawings unrelated to productions for example, JH/3/54 has sketches of flowers and the waiting room at St Marys Hospital. Most contain a mixture of professional and personal information for example, to do lists, contacts details or diary entries.
Titles:
The first part of the title denotes the format [i.e. notebook], the second part of the title denotes the main production or main theme [e.g. Prometheus or Greek plays]. For the main part the second title has been assigned for clarity as few have original titles however, where the second part is the original title given by Herbert it has been placed in quotation marks. |
