Description | By Anton Chekhov (Translator Ann Jellicoe), Director Tony Richardson. Premiere, The Queen's Theatre [English Stage Company], 12 Mar 1964. The file contains costume and set designs. The costumes and sets are in the style of the play's contemporary period [written in 1895 and first produced in 1896], with a number of the costume designs showing how workers would have dressed [cook, 2043]. The costume designs are annotated by character name, some by Act number also. Many are drawn is a light tonal palette with burgundy washes for example, 1979 however, the more developed designs use a wide range of tones drawn from the same colours [for example dark burgundy through to pale pink or dark burnt orange through to gold] for example, 1999 is a pink day dress and 1988 is a day dress in striped mustard/white. A number of the drawings show extra details for example, parasols and hats such as in 1988. A number are line drawings for example, 2002. The male garments are generally darker in tone for example, 2023. 2046-9 map out/storyboard the sets for the four acts in line drawings. The colours vary from mustards and browns for interiors and trees to luminous greens and blues for external daytime scenes [2051 and 2055 respectively]. There are a number of different designs for a wood, both in technique and appearance but mainly showing perspective to give the wood depth for example, 2055 is a watercolour whilst 2056 uses a variety of techniques such as scratches in the paper. Gauze was used, probably the background scenery was painted onto it, and a sample still exists [2060]. Pen, pencil and paint on paper. Gauze.
