Description | By William Shakespeare, Director Tony Richardson [film based on stage production at The Roundhouse Theatre, both 1969]. The file contains costume and set designs. Many of the costumes are in bright colour with metallic elements and design features created by collage for example, 2480 with others in muted/naturalistic tones and a few [see 2536] with painted 'florals', with some annotated by character name. Some drawings show groups of people for example 2490-1 and others give a double view of the same garment for example, 2489, recto and verso. Some show characters with extra items for example, 2511 a drum. The players have fantastical costumes and make-up/masks for example, 2516 and 2557. A number give alternative colours/designs to the same outfit for example, 2525-6 Ophelia reading. There is a large number of line drawings for example, 2550 and some portraits for example, 2558. The sets are stylistic for example, 2561 and 2565 are designs for tress but at first glance they look like highly decorative fans on silk. The sets are storyboarded, 2710-15; 17-9. Gauze was used and designs to be added on top are included for example, 2720-30. Also includes storyboards for the theatre production, ink on paper including coloured sketches.
