DescriptionBy Eugene Ionesco [Translator Donald Watson], Director Tony Richardson, premiere 14 May 1957, The Royal Court Theatre. The Chairs was Herbert's first set at the Theatre and the file contains costume and set drawings, the set was built as a rotunda. The costume designs use a muted palette and shades of grey and black, with flashes of brighter colour. The designs are annotated with the character name and additional notes for example, 0183 'Joan Plowright/old women'. Some of the set drawings include line painted details of the set as well as the full design for example, 0180. The colour of the final sets reflected the palette used in the costumes, although earlier designs [0187] used brighter accent colours. Herbert herself referred to the set taking 'a long time to get in right'.
