DescriptionBy Samuel Beckett, Directors George Devine and Donald McWhinnie, premiere 28 Oct 1958, The Royal Court Theatre. The file contains costume and set designs. The style of the designs is markedly different from those of Herbert's first seven productions, using pen and pencil to produce sketches that have been built up using a series of lines or scratches. George Devine played Hamm, a number of the costume designs are for the character and are annotated as such. Hamm's outfits and positioning is reminiscent of Francis Bacon's (1909-1992) interpretation of Pope Innocent X by Diego Velázquez (1599-1660). The set drawings are in pencil and show the positioning of furniture/objects on the stage, 1456-1457 are floor plans of the stage area that also show the positioning of furniture/objects. Only two set designs use colour [1458-1459] and the palette uses golds, greys and greens.
Pencil, pen and paint on paper.
