Description | This file includes two copies of the report compiled by Norman Marshall, Michael MacOwan and Kenneth Rae following their visit to Scandinavia, entitled ''Report on a tour of Scandinavian theatres made by representatives of the National Theatre Building Sub-Committee' (20/09/1946). The report lists the theatres and other venues visited during the tour; the findings are organised into sections covering the following areas: entrance to the theatre, box office, main hall, foyers, cloakrooms, auditorium (including shape of auditorium, seating and lighting), fore-stage, proscenium, stage (including stage mechanism and cyclorama), stage management devices, lighting, dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, green room, paint shops and carpenter's shops, storage for scenery, furniture, props and wardrobe and managerial offices. The report also includes some recommendations for desirable features such as staff and actors restaurants and other backstage facilities, and a short section on small theatres visited during the tour. General conclusions are enclosed at the end.
One of the two copies of the report encloses a page with a statement on the subject of the National Theatre, describing the objectives of the National Theatre project and plans for the proposed building, following the amalgamation with the Old Vic. |
