Description | Folder 1 of 2 of this file covers the years [1924] and 1948-1960 and documents the support of the British Drama League to the National Theatre movement. This folder includes material such as letters from the League to the treasury (November and March 1960), in support of the movement; correspondence between Kenneth Rae and members of the League, again documenting the League's support to the National Theatre project (1948, 1954, 1957); Ralph Richardson to propose a resolution in favour of the National Theatre at British Drama League meeting of 23/05/1953. The folder also includes a draft report prepared by the League, for the attention of the SMNT Committee; reports details steps to be taken to realise the National Theatre project, including building and endowing a theatre, with particulars on the amount to be raised, fundraising and publicity strategy (including the suggestions of selling shares in the theatre to members of the public) and composition of the executive body in charge of the prospective theatre [ca. 1924 or earlier, cf. p. 12].
Folder 2 of 2 covers the years 1924, 1935 and 1966-1969 and documents more generally the work of the British Drama League, as opposed to the League's interaction with the National Theatre project. It includes material such as meeting notices, agenda and minutes and some correspondence with members of the League. It seems that these are Kenneth Rae's British Drama League papers. This folder also includes a copy of 'Memorandum of evidence for submission to the Adult Education Committee of the Board of Education in relation to its inquiry into "The Arts in Adult Education", compiled by the British Drama League (April 1935). |
