DescriptionDocumentation on the process of appointing Brian O'Rorke to work as a joint architect with Cecil Masey and of Masey's previous collaboration with architect Edwin Lutyens on the on the NT project. The file documents efforts of the Joint Council to bring together an Advisory Committee of distinguished architects to recommend a name for the NT; confidential correspondence reporting proceedings at the meeting of such Advisory Committee, when the name of O'Rorke was recommended; notes by Rae to O'Rorke on some desired architectural features for the NT, ca. May 1946; official letters of appointment to Masey and O'Rorke. Masey and O'Rorke's private expression of concern at working with the other, and highlight issues and potential ways forward; issue of trying to harmonise the position of the two architects and reaching agree on the form of collaboration and associated communications/negotiations.
At the very beginning of the file is a brief exchange between Rae and a representative of the Festival of Britain, about someone (un-named) putting himself forward [as architect] for the NT, 1949.
