DescriptionThis file documents the 'Shakespeare Matineé in aid of the National Theatre Appeal, in the presence of TRH the Duke and Duchess of York', to take place at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 26 November 1935, 2.30pm.
The file includes souvenir programme for the matineé, which will feature extracts from the following works by Shakespeare: Julius Caesar, the Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet, Macbeth, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Twelfth Night, As You Like It, Henry VIII, Henry IV, Sonnets No. 90 and 98, Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra, Othello, Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing. A synopsis of each play is given in the programme.
The file also includes an invitation to a meeting to discuss arrangements for the Matineé, organised by the Chairman and Members of the Matineé Committee (10 copies); invitation to short address to be delivered by the Earl of Lytton at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in connection with the Matineé (4 copies); a flyer advertising the Matineé, with names of performers who have agreed to take part and programme (1 copy).
