Description | The file contains letters and postcards from Anderson, there is also an invite for Herbert to Anderson's memorial celebration at The Royal Court Theatre, 20 Nov 1994, some press cuttings, a few photographs, a typed synopsis for Anderson's film 'Britannia Hospital' [released 1982] and a brochure for The Royal Court Theatre that has been annotated by Anderson. The communications span greater part of Anderson's and Herbert's working partnership and each one states where it has been written from so it is possible to plot Anderson's movements [most are dated]; the communications include Anderson's views on Herbert's designs and comments on how his productions should look. They also reveal the quality of the relationship. There is also reference to projects such as 'The Cherry Orchard', 22 Apr 1983. Also includes postcards from David Storey and one postcard from 'Ron' [probably Ron Eyre]. As well as discussing projects the letters refer to other issues, such as: the English Stage Company's [The Royal Court Theatre] new play policy, typed letter 'Thursday morning' [possibly 1976/1977] and business matters related to the Company for example, 15 Dec 1976; references to Anderson's involvement in anti-censorship drives for example, 14 Apr 1978 petition; and references to Malcolm McDowell, Laurence Olivier and other known stage and screen actors for example, 16 Aug 1989. Also contains three postcards from Lindsay to Jocelyn Herbert. Anderson started out as a theatre director and became a film and theatre director and he and Herbert collaborated a number of times, on stage and screen: at The Royal Court on 'Serjeant Musgrave's Dance' 1959, 'Cob and Leach' 1960', Julius Caesar' 1964, 'Home' 1970, 'The Changing Room' 1971, 'Life Class' 1974; at the National Theatre 'Early Days' 1980; at the Cottesloe/National Theatre 'Stages' 1992. They collaborated on a number of films, with Anderson as the director: 'The Whales of August' 1987; 'O Lucky Man!' 1973; and 'If....' 1968 [Anderson also co-wrote the script]. |
