Description | The file contains a letter from William Gaskill [Bill Gaskill], then Artistic Director of the English Stage Company, to Herbert with the provisional programme for 1969 plus comments on Life Price; minutes which discuss programming and associated papers such as agendas, related letters and financial statements; on the verso of the statement for 1967-1968 are sketches by Herbert with annotations on the text; a carbon copy of a letter May 20 1966 from Bill Gaskill to George Harewood (Chairman of ESC) regarding a change of policy. There is also information on Theatre policy and funding bid to the Arts Council in relation to the creation of a second theatre space and a report on the change from the repertory system and one on performing school syllabus plays. Of note is the text for the Theatres Bill which proposed the abolition of theatre censorship, 1968. Sections of the minutes relate to the court case bought against Esdaile, Bill Gaskill and Greville Poke in relation to staging Edward Bond's Saved; and to the Special Performance on June 13 1966 at the Old Vic to raise money for the George Devine Award.
