The costumes vary from suits with top hats to Chinese robes with other garments in the 1910s style, many of the women have flags [see 4109-4115]. Except for the flags the colours are muted black, greys and browns for the Westerners with jewels colours such as reds and golds for the Chinese. 4091 shows a number of Chinese figures and is possibly research into costumes, other group pictures appear to be designs for example, 4103 shows three garments one from the verso. 4119-21 shows the characters in 'life action' undertaking table industries, with notes explaining the tasks. The set backdrops were projected with set pieces on boards. One such set piece, a Chinese screen, is shown in colour and graphite [4077-4081] using black and white with red and gold, 4082-3 show elements of the design. The backdrop depicts a devastated war landscape of burnt out trees, though 4127 have some leaves in greens contrasting the black of the trees. Pen, paint and pencil on paper.
