Description | The series contains Herbert's original set and costumes designs, most have been digitised and are also available as a colour slide. The alternative reference code relates to the number given to the digitised drawing. The majority are in their original files, where they are not the drawings have been collated together under the title of the production to which they relate [as this is how the original files were kept]. The drawings span Herbert's entire career, both as a student at the London Theatre Studio and as a professional designer for theatre and film. Mostly they are annotated by Herbert in some form for example, by character name and this has been noted where relevant. The costume designs are frequently painted and then cut out and stuck onto a secondary piece of paper. Productions are listed in date order [by year], where performed and with what director. Following these is a sequence of unperformed/un-staged plays, designs for orchestral performances and then a piece for a play performed by not designed by Herbert [In Celebration]. Some productions have no drawings: The Good Women of Setzuan [1956]; The Kitchen [1959]; Skyvers [1963]; Hedda Garbler [1974]. JH/4/1-89 are all housed in original folders created by Herbert, they may be some further additions [accruals] which will be added, as far as possible in date order, after JH/4/89. Note regarding dating: the date given is the year of the premiere performance or film release and not necessarily of the drawings, as these are undated, which in some cases may have been worked on for some time before the performance/release date.
